1,861 water
systems in 29 states have been contaminated with MTBE, exposing as many as 45 million
Americans to this potential carcinogen, but Rep. Hayes
voted to protect the
companies responsible from lawsuits by communities that
need their help to clean up these systems.
Rep. Hayes voted for a massive
sell off of public lands to mining interests.
Rep. Hayes voted against bipartisan reform of the Endangered Species Act.
On 10/07/2005 Robin Hayes voted to limit
the use of cleaner fuels, undermining the efforts of
states to improve air quality and hampering the introduction of less
polluting low-sulfur diesel fuel. He also voted to unnecessarily extend
Clean Air Act deadlines for ozone pollution cleanup, putting millions of Americans at
health risk.
Also in 2005, Hayes voted three times against measures to crack down on price gouging
at the pump. Congress attempted to give the Federal Trade Commission
new authority last year to investigate and prosecute those that engage
in predatory pricing. The measure also would have increased funding for
low-income energy assistance to be paid for through fines paid by price
gouging energy companies.
He also voted against an alternative energy plan last year that would have increased investment in new sources of energy like ethanol. (source: HR 6, Vote #118, 4/20/2005)
On 05/18/2006 Robin Hayes voted against
safeguarding the Outerbanks in North Carolina from natural
oil and gas drilling.
